International Experience Canada (IEC)

Overview of IEC

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a set of programs offering young citizens from certain countries the opportunity to live and work in Canada for a limited time. Participants can obtain a work permit without a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), making the process simpler than most foreign worker applications. IEC permits are generally valid for up to one year, providing the perfect chance to explore Canada while gaining valuable work experience.

Programs Included in IEC

IEC consists of three main streams, each designed for different needs and career goals.

  • Working Holiday – An open work permit allowing you to work for any employer anywhere in Canada.

  • Young Professionals – A job-specific work permit tied to one employer, aimed at professional career development.

  • International Co-op Internship – For students seeking work placements in Canada as part of their academic program.

Not all countries offer all three programs. Some may provide only one or two options, so it’s important to check your country’s eligibility before applying.

How Selection Works

IEC operates through a lottery system. Not every candidate who applies will be selected, as each country has a specific quota for each program. Once you confirm that your country participates and you’ve chosen a program, you can create an online profile. If you’re selected, you’ll receive an invitation to apply for a work permit.

IEC Eligibility Requirements

While the exact conditions depend on the program and your country of citizenship, the general requirements include:

  • Age between 18 and 35 years (varies by country)

  • Citizenship from a country with a bilateral agreement with Canada

  • Compliance with the specific program criteria (e.g., a job offer is required for Young Professionals and International Co-op, but not for Working Holiday)

The Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holiday program is ideal for those who want the freedom to work and travel across Canada without being tied to a single employer. Selected participants receive an open work permit, allowing them to take on short-term jobs, seasonal positions, or even professional roles while exploring different regions.

For many, this program is a stepping stone to permanent residency, especially through streams like the Canadian Experience Class.

Young Professionals Program

The Young Professionals program allows participants to gain professional work experience in Canada with one employer in a role related to their field of study or expertise.

To qualify:

  • You must have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer

  • The role must match a specific skill level according to the National Occupational Classification (NOC)

  • You must be willing to work for the same employer and location throughout your stay

This program is often chosen by those looking to strengthen their profile for Express Entry or provincial immigration streams.

International Co-op Internship Program

Designed for students enrolled in post-secondary programs in their home country, the International Co-op program enables participants to complete a relevant work placement in Canada.

To be eligible:

  • You must have a work placement offer directly related to your field of study

  • The work permit will be employer-specific and valid only for the duration of the internship

This is an excellent way to gain hands-on Canadian work experience before applying for a student visa or future work permits.

Why Join the IEC Program?

IEC offers far more than just temporary work in Canada. Participants benefit from career advancement through Canadian work experience, cultural exchange in a diverse society, and the flexibility to travel and explore Canada’s regions. Canadian work experience can also improve eligibility for immigration programs like Express Entry or the Canadian Experience Class.
